Saint Hubert

Saint Hubert is the Patron Saint of Hunting and Hunters.

The 3rd of November is Saint Hubert's feast day, it is celebrated across central and eastern Europe as well as in some parts of North America. 
Hubert was born to a noble family around 656AD, near Toulouse. Hubert married Floribanne, daughter of Count Leuvin.  When Floribanne died in childbirth, in grief, Hubert retreated from the courts to the forests of the Ardennes and devoted himself full time to hunting.

 As Legend goes on a Good Friday morning, while other faithful would have been in church, Hubert was out hunting in the forest. While in pursuit of a majestic stag the animal turned and Hubert was astonished to see a crucifix floating between the stag’s antlers. Hubert then heard a voice tell him: "Hubert unless thou turnest to the Lord and leadest a holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into Hell."

Hubert immediately got down from his horse and threw himself on the ground, crying "Lord, what wouldst Thou have me do?" to which he was told, "Seek Lambert, he will instruct you."  Hubert set out immediately for Maastricht where Lambert was Bishop.

Hubert eventually became the first Bishop of Liege, a kind and loved Bishop who gave away his episcopal income to the poor, fasted and prayed diligently and became famous for his eloquence. He died on May 30th 727 AD and in 1744 was canonised and named the patron saint of hunting and hunters.
