It was during the 18th century that the dining room became a separate area within the French home. Previously the table consisted of planks on trestles and were removed at the end of the meal. Dressers were used primarily for food storage. Over the years the dining room evolved into an area for discussion and conviviality. Reflecting lifestyles, this room acquired more furniture and continues to mirror prevailing tastes and styles. Click on the main image to the left to view a larger picture.
